Fraction Penguins!

As part of our learning about fractions, we decided to make fraction penguin pictures.  We had to create all the body parts from fractions of a circle including halves, quarters and eighths.  It was a fun way to help us learn!  We think our fraction penguins are pretty cool!

LZ7's favourite fruit graph!

We are learning about statistics and today we made a graph about our favourite fruit in LZ7. Strawberries had the most votes with 13 children choosing it as their favourite fruit. Blueberries were second with 4 votes and grapes were third with 2 votes. No one liked the orange as their favourite and apples and bananas only got one vote each!

Maths Fun!

We love doing maths in LZ7 and wanted to share a fabulous game that Mrs Browne taught us. It is called "Shake and add it up" and you have to add dice and get four in a row to be the winner. Here are some photos of us learning how to play and giving it a try in buddies. Click on the comic to make it bigger!

Money master!

We have been practising our money counting skills this week in preparation for our upcoming market day. Ms Bower found this great game online to help us. You can play in lots of different currencies if you want to. Give it a try by clicking on the picture link.

Fruit shoot addition game!

Hi guys! Here is another great game that you can play during the holidays (or during term!) - you squash the fruit with the number that matches the equation...the faster you go, the more points you get. It makes a great splat sound as well!! Give it a try by clicking on the image above.

Look at our fraction mice!

As part of our learning about fractions we made fraction mice this week! First we had to trace around a circle and cut it out carefully and we had to fold it into eighths (eight equal parts). We needed half the circle for the mouse body, 2 eighths for the ears, 1 eighth for the head and 1 eighth for the cheese. We had to put it all together and add details like whiskers and a tail before colouring it in. We loved making them and think they look great!

Fractions!

In maths we have been looking at fractions this week. We have been making fractions of objects and of groups of objects. This activity takes us through the basics of what fractions are and has a good activity to practise our fraction skills - click on it to give it a try!
Below are some photos o
f us creating fractions out of geometric shapes.

Beep!

One of our favourite maths games is 'Beep'. First we make a circle and count in ones around the circle. The people who land on a multiple of 5 don't say the number but say "beep" instead and sit down. The winner of the game is the last one left standing. When we play it when try and beat our best time. We are down to 3 minutes and 20 seconds! It is a fun learning game.

Cross the swamp game!

We started playing 'Cross the swamp' after seeing it in LZ5. It is a great way to practise our counting skills. Give it a go at home with mum and dad!

Shape straws!

Last week we were looking at 2 dimensional shapes and we made some out of straws and string. We had to think very carefully about the shape we had chosen and how many sides it had and whether they were the same length. It was lots of fun and we made diamonds, squares, triangles, oblongs, hexagons and octogons!

Shape Hunt!

Look at all the 2 dimensional shapes we found in the playground! Shapes are all around us wherever we are! Thanks to Mr V for putting these together in photoshop for us!

Place value fun!

We have been learning about place value in maths lately and have been having lots of fun with making big numbers in bundles of 10s and 1s, playing place value bingo, adding and subtracting BIG numbers, finding online activities and playing traffic lights. We now know HEAPS about place value which is good because that is useful number knowledge!

Turtle maths!

We are busy practising our basic facts to get better at adding and subtracting faster and faster! Some of us were playing Murtle's turtles where we have to find the answers to sums as fast as we can. First one to fill up the turtle correctly wins!

Easter symmetry activity - just for fun!

Found this fun Easter egg designing activity on one of our favourite websites - click on the image to go to the link. You can make your own egg design and learn a little about symmetry at the same time! Symmetry is when one shape becomes exactly like another if you flip, slide or turn it. The simplest form of symmetry is reflection or 'mirror' symmetry like this egg shows.

Number bonds games!

Thanks to one of our blog buddies - SPS superstars - we have found these great number bond games to practice at home! Just click on either image to take you to the website!

Smartie challenge!

We have been learning to sort and graph information as part of our maths this term. We had a 'smartie challenge' to complete our work. We each got a box of smartie lollies and had to sort them into colours. We made a tally chart and used the information to create a bar graph. The best part was EATING the smarties when we were finished!!

Tally marks!

Today in maths we were working on tally marks. We found a great interactive activity and had turns working on the e-beam with it. Then we went outside to practise using our tally mark skills to count the different coloured cars that drove past. Silver was the most popular, followed by white and black! It was lots of fun and even Mr Flanagan came past to check out what we were up to!
The online activity is posted below.

Great maths game for sorting and graphing!

We found this activity today through the BBC website and really enjoyed doing it. The great thing is now you can do it at home as well!
